Acne is mainly caused by the obstruction of the skin pores be sebum, which in turn traps bacteria and rubbles from dead cells. When this happens, it forms first a white or black dot. There are many myths about acne: it’s allegedly caused by a poor diet, poor hygiene, or heredity.  None of these statements is true of course. If eating well, drinking lots of water and exercise regularly helps secure beautiful skin, it doesn’t imply that eating chocolate or junk food will cause acne.

The real cause of acne is overactive sebaceous glands in the skin. These glands produce sebum, which is the natural oil that moisturizes and protects your skin. When these glands produce too much sebum it accumulates and blocks the pores of the skin. And do these glands start to over-produce?  Essentially because of some hormonal imbalance! The sebaceous glands are very sensitive to the hormone level in the blood. It explains why Teens, who experience significant hormonal changes, are the favorite victims of acne. However, hormonal changes can occur at any step of a lifetime; menopause, pregnancy, disease. Children and adults are not immune to acne. Environmental factors can also cause acne: from contact with industrial chemicals to friction of a brace.

Acne can also be hereditary. Some peoples are more prone than others to suffer from acne in times of stress or hormonal changes. Whatever the cause of acne, it is a skin disease usually embarrassing for those who have it and it often affects one’s social life.

The best way to treat acne is still to prevent it. There are several tips to help prevent acne :

  • Keep your hands away from your face. The hands carry bacteria, oil and dirt, even if we do not realize it. We can unconsciously touch our face several times a day, out of habit. Dirt and bacteria can then infect the pores of the skin.
  • Try to keep a healthy lifestyle and good hygiene: eat well, drink plenty of water, do not smoke, sleep well, and exercise regularly; it leads to a beautiful skin.
  • Keep your face clean and hydrated. Wash the skin of your face in the morning and at night with a mild soap.
  • If you suffer from acne, use soap or a cleansing lotion containing benzoyl peroxide, specially formulated to treat acne.  A large variety of products specially designed to cure acne are available on the market; soap, lotion, creams, medicated lady wipes, astringent.  In many cases they are sufficient to solve the problem.
  • Creams containing benzoyl peroxide, vitamin A and zinc are best to help treat acne.
  • For severe cases of acne, an oral antibiotic may be prescribed more effective that OTC products.  One should therefore never hesitate to see a doctor or a dermatologist if acne becomes uncontrollable.

It’s possible to control acne and even prevent it and there’s no need to be ashamed of the pimples. You now have the tools to fight back!
